posted 10.11.10 at 8:53pm 42 comments

On today's show we had special coverage of the protests taking place in London about the rise of tuition fees to £9000 and 40% cuts to university funding.

We followed our reporters there who witnessed the violence that broke out first hand, and discussed how this might affect the impact of the protest. We also reported on the University of Nottingham's views on the cuts and rise in tuition fees and got a statement from Lilian Greenwood MP for Nottingham South.

Understanding student fees

Are you confused about proposed changes to student fees? Why have the government decided to put them up to £9,000? Well, in preparation for the student demo in London tomorrow, we had third year economics student Matt Richmond in the studio to give us a bit of insight into the financial side of the situation.

Let us know your thoughts - is it unfair that students pay so much to go to university OR do you feel that the government needs to get the money from somewhere and students will earn the money back in the future?

And remember to tune into the Afternoon Show with Ollie and Liam AND the Pulse tomorrow for breaking news on the protests.

We talked about how the new tuition fee proposals may see the gap year becoming a dying breed.

Most of you seemed to think that the structured gap year, with organised voluntary work, is here to stay. The conclusion was that what may struggle to live is the "Gap Yah" voyage of discovery type gap year that involves more vomming than volunteering!
