Rob Williams reports on football commentary work experience.

posted 16.03.11 at 3:48pm

I’ve always found work experience a daunting period of time.
When I was 15, I spent a week with the caretaker of a Squash Club, wiping courts, clearing litter and pulling pints. It was bearable until the second day when he found out my name was Robert Williams, after which the caretaker proceeded to shout ‘ANGELS’ in my face at every opportunity. His wit was wasted in that place.

A year later, I was shadowing the editor of the local free newspaper. He spent most of his day sneakily sending flirty instant messages to a mysterious woman called ‘Gwen’, whilst I sat behind him pretending to file his post. Interestingly, I met his wife on my last day there. She wasn’t called Gwen.

My experiences of work shadowing have never been boring, but I’ve always been aware that the men I shadowed were flawed human beings, and not shining examples to aspire towards. And that made my experience this week even more daunting.

England vs. France. A fans eye-view with Louis Cotgrove

England vs France – Wednesday 17th November 2010 at Wembley Stadium.

Exclusively for URN, Louis Cotgrove reports on the England vs. France friendly international, which can only be described as a waste of 20 quid.

Passion, commitment, desire, enjoyment, entertainment. These five words can be applied to any England national team, except perhaps football. The players seemed to merely pay lip service to the honour of representing one’s country in a sporting medium. The defence was shoddy, the midfield lacklustre, the attack limited. When I told people, I was at the England game, the responses were all the same, “Commiserations”, “I turned it over halfway through”, “They are [awful], why [on earth] would you go to see them play?” I wish I could disagree…

The perils of the Championship supporter, an insight into fans of lower league football

posted 28.11.10 at 11:04pm

You don’t choose to support a lower league team; you choose to support Manchester United or Arsenal. Supporting a lower league team is forced upon you. You’re either born into a club or dragged into due to location. If you’re born in Brighton and your Dad supports Cardiff, you aren’t going to be an Aston Villa fan. Being born into a club, you’re led to believe that they are the greatest club and it’s hard to realise that they aren’t. Being brought up as a Forest fan and believing Steve Chettle to be a cultured defender, or that Neil Shipperley really was good enough to hit the back of the net on a regular basis (his record of 1 in 20 for the club would suggest otherwise), it became hard to admit that we really weren’t as good as
my Dad promised we would be.
