Jack's band of the week- Vampire Weekend

posted 19.03.13 at 9:44pm by Jack Wood

I know I usually I write about bringing you new or more unheard of tracks to your attention dedicated viewers, but this week, with just a Tweet from the Vampire Weekend saying they were dropping two new tracks I couldn't resist. So the question is what are they like, and what are they indicating for the new album?

We've already heard a song being bambled about the internet 'unbelievers'. A song seemingly about dying as unbelievers, lyrically a curveball for all vampire weekend fans, but played over two piano tracks of short sharp notes, it's not a leap more of a stroll away from previous albums.

Everyone knows though that the third album for any band is an uphill struggle, no longer can you simply build upon the first album with added experience and influences (which Vampire Weekend excelled at, adding a further Mexican influence, to their already full bag of tricks of classical, African and preppy sounds for 'Contra').

So what does "Diana Young" and "Steps" say about the "Modern Vampires of the City"?

Event: Women’s Netball Varsity
Location: Sport Centre, University of Nottingham
Date: 20th March
Start Time: 2.30pm

Varsity “Super Wednesday” is almost upon us and although it has been reduced to just 2 events, it could be a pivotal day in deciding the destination of the Varsity trophy. The women’s netball team will try and help secure the Varsity series for Nottingham University, who only require 2 more points to seal victory. With a win here and at Lacrosse later the same day Uni will attain an unassailable lead and retain the Varsity trophy for the first time in the competition's history.

Trent will be keen to gain revenge over their cross-city counterparts however, following a hotly-contested 46-38 victory for Uni in the 2012 Varsity series which helped Uni on their way to a 9-6 overall victory and allowed them to reclaim the trophy that had sat in Trent's trophy cabinet for the previous two years.

Nina Hatch - Galaxies, Chocolate & Outreach (18/03/2013)

Dr Nina Hatch, from the school of Physics & Astronomy, researches the lives of the most massive galaxies in the universe. As well as this, she searches far back in the universe's history for the galaxies that have eventually come to be part of the gravitationally bound clusters of galaxies we observe in the local universe.

Today Nina joins Hena and Carl (Jr.) in the studio for a chat about her research and the science outreach projects Nina is involved with. These important projects, such as the astronomy department's portable inflatable planetarium (The Inflativerse) spread awareness of both physics and astronomy and plant that seed in both the old and young that could eventually lead to a career in the field.

Varsity 2013: Swimming post match report

posted 17.03.13 at 6:29pm by The Sport Show

Another year and another victory in the pool sees University of Nottingham (UoN) continue their amazing winning streak at Swimming Varsity. This competition historically has always been a one sided affair; not much changed on Wednesday as UoN beat Trent 138-80, winning all but one event at the sports center.

The only Trent victory came in the 100m women’s Breaststroke, with an impressive time of 1.16m.

The highlight of the competition was the Medley Skins event. In only its 3rd year, the event has become a massive hit with the spectators. The choice of stroke for each of the 8 rounds were picked random and with the last placed finisher in each round eliminated the event is a test of endurance and versatility. Alice Morgan (UoN) and Ian MacMillan (UoN) were the winners of the men and women’s event.

The standout competitors of the day were Ian MacMillan (UoN) in the 100m Butterfly, Chloe Robbins (UoN) in the Individual Medley/ Freestyle and Amy Root (Trent) in the Breaststroke.

Sam Jackson, President of the UoN Swim Team, spoke of his delight in the performance of the team, especially with their busy schedule competing in the BUCS finals.

Victory in the pool leaves the current scores of the Charity Varsity series as 4-2 to UoN.
